The Last Song of the Glass Ghost

The Last Song of the Glass Ghost repurposes a defunct iPad, a symbol of planned obsolescence. Designed for a brief functional life, the device is transformed into a plate for intricate intaglio work.

Using drypoint and stippling, I engrave a finely incised image that sits beneath the shattered glass screen. This layered structure brings the hand-worked surface into direct tension with the fractured surface of the device. Cracks in the glass intersect with the protected form below, highlighting the contrast between failing technology and the persistence of nature.

The work responds to electronic waste and questions a culture of disposable devices. It asks whether objects designed to expire can be reimagined beyond their intended use and lifespan.

Medium:

  • Defunct iPad with shattered glass screen
  • Original fractured glass digitiser
  • Engraved glass plate
  • Hardened steel needles and precision blades
  • Matte black, blue, and silver backing

Dimensions: Approx. 19.64 (H) x 13.48 (W) x 0.63 (D) cm

Technique: Built to expire, a discarded iPad is repurposed as an intaglio plate, transforming obsolescence into a lasting image. Beneath shattered glass, birdsong and glitch give rise to a ‘Glass Ghost,’ etched in time.
